Only if you go to their church.

Sheesh, I thought Louisville (KY) had crime problems!

Jefferson Co had 81 homicides -justifiable and non justifiable - this year, up from 55 last year. Most of those murders occurred in a pretty small area

courier-journal.com » Jefferson County homicide database (http://c-jonline.com/homicides/victims.php?year=2007 - broken link)

Do you know anyone in Memphis who wants to kill you?

If you don't and you are cautious, then don't worry about it too much.

And get an alarm on your car, maybe a kill switch and get a monitored alarm on your house.

That being said, last year my son was in the wrong place at the wrong time in Bartlett and had a mugger put a gun to his head. The guy did leave him his wallet and cell, just took his money.

Last week a guy pointed a gun at my DH at his job in Midtown.

We had a car stolen in Raleigh and one stolen at Wolfchase.
We live in a very nice rural area and twice there were attempts to steal two other cars from our driveway. Our home has been broken into twice, once 10 years ago and once last year.

And someone stole the bunny rabbit statue out of my garden.

Things are changing in the world. It's not just Memphis and bad stuff can happen anywhere. It's a big bad scary world.

Still, most of the foks who are murdered know the person who did it.
So if no one who knows you wants to kill you, then you are ahead of the game.

There have been two murders in our area in the past year, one was some boys who were drinking and got into a fight over a girl.
The other was an older couple who were drinking and she ended up shot to death. Both of these events were tragic, but neither was a danger to anyone else.

So do be aware, but please don't be paranoid.

You mean that you've never had anything like that happen to you YET?

I've lived in the Memphis area (Berclair, Frayser, Bartlett, Cordova, and finally Bartlett) for my entire life (almost 40 years) and the only crime I have experienced is some tools stolen from the bed of my truck at Shelby Farms in 1988 and my tires slashed by a neighborhood hoodlum in 1985. I'm still cautious and keep my eyes open whenever I'm out and about, but not everyone in the Memphis area gets their car stolen, their home burglarized, or mugged on a yearly basis.

In fact, in my extended family in the area, their has been 1 car burglary (in an area of midtown so known for such things that he left his car unlocked and window cracked...but someone still busted the window..nothing to steal, so nothing was taken), one armed encounter (in 1982 in Raleigh with the bad dude running away after other folks noticed the situation), and two break-ins of a detached garage (in the Nutbush area, well known for such stuff for years). This may seem like a lot, but it involves around 50 close family members in the Memphis area since the 50's.

That being said, I would again tell anyone who moves here to be vigilant, get a home alarm system, and leave your garage door shut.
