I am looking at apts around the Memphis area and wanted to know where are nice, affordable and safe areas to live. Also, areas to avoid. I would like to stay near my work, which is downtown.

Downtown is probably your best bet. Midtown fits the criteria but the apartment stock is not as nice.

If you're a young professional looking for a nice place, definitely consider downtown. There are many awesome places for rent and so much going on. You can certainly google downtown Memphis rentals and should find something to suit your needs.

Downtown = instant community
Search Craigs list... seems to the forum most used for rentals downtown... anything from the uptown area to south bluffs to mud Island you should be fine.

You can find nice in Midtown, but the apartments are usually older or duplex houses even (which can be great or awful depending on your neighbors). What sort of nightlife are you looking for? country&western? urban? electro? sports bars? gay? straight? Downtown is great, but if you don't mind doing a lot of looking and checking out, you might like areas like Cooper Young too (don't leave valuables in your car!!!!)
