I've searched the forum and there are not many posts from teachers relocating to Maui. If there are, there aren't any follow-ups.

What was your hiring process like? The DOE website says that after filling out the application, you must interview in Oahu before your application gets placed into the pool and that you apply to statewide, not by island. In addition, preference is given to residents (rightly so).

Has anyone gone through this process from out of state? Care to share? And what do you teach? I fear that my speciality (MAT in Art, 10 yrs teaching experience at middle school level) might be more of a hindrance since it's not a high-need area. Otherwise, I'd make the move first and apply as a resident. Another, more time-consuming option is to acquire a separate certification in a more high-need area, but as I do my research, it's looking to be a difficult process (more school!!).

I'm not averse to working regular jobs temporarily. I have years of waitressing experience, certified yoga instructor, paintings for sale, could teach community art classes, have experience fronting bands (as a singer), have worked as a bank teller, in a supermarket, and helped my mom with her small business. I would also be bringing enough money for a down payment on a small condo since I have a dog. Don't worry, I'm not ready to drop everything and move just yet...just doing my due diligence and research.

Mahalo!

FYI, take home pay is $400 less per month for an entry level government salary than the same salary in the private sector.

That $400 includes the union dues, pension, and health insurance. The only gov positions that aren't union are manager ones and some weird ones like at the UH Research Corporation

I've been teaching for 10 years now in a public school and am also a union member. I am aware of the deductions...very aware. Thanks!
