My husband and I recently relocated to South Dartmouth from NJ. While I am absolutely loving it, I am still having difficulty adjusting to the change and don't know anyone up here. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any of the following:
1. a vet - I have 2 older dogs
2. a butcher shop (not Portuguese- I'm on a mission to find an untrimmed brisket for the Jewish holidays ; )
3. A "higher end" hair salon- pref one that uses Redken products (comfort zone!)
4. A nail salon that is immaculate!
5. A general doctor for me and my husband
6. A podiotrist

Anything you can do to help would be most appreciated!!!!

Thanks a bunch!

Hello, and Welcome to Massachusetts. I'm very familiar with your area as I grew up there, but as a 23 year old guy, a lot of stuff you're looking for is way out of my area of knowledge. I'll ask some friends and family and get back to you on some of it, but here's what I have just to get you started.

1) We used the Assonet Animal Hospital as it was close by, but many people swear by Anchor Animal Hospital (link here: Anchor Animal Hospital - Dartmouth, MA Animal Hospital ).

2) Unfortunately, even the butcher shops that aren't necessarily Portuguese, really do specialize in Portuguese style meats. I'd try My Family Meat Market in Fall River (call first and save yourself a trip). If they don't have what you want, Providence (ask in the Providence forum) will be your best bet. I know they have some good ones, I just can't think of names.

3) I'm out of my league here. Some of my closer friends rave about Salon Lola in Downtown New Bedford (link HERE). Genesis (also downtown New Bedford) does well too, but again, I'm out of my element here. My mother swears by Impressions Hair Designers on Route 6 (near the 140 intersection) on the New Bedford/Dartmouth line... their number is (508) 990-1992‎ so you can call and see what they're all about. Again, until my mother found this place, she made trips to Providence for the Salon.

4)There are bunches of these. I know there are about 4 or 5 (2 inside) right near the Dartmouth Mall. I'll ask my sister for a specific recommendation, but in the meantime, you can check the ones near the mall out to see if they meet your standards (never been myself, but I'm sure I'd want immaculate too").

5 & 6, I just don't know. We use Dr. Gloria Mercado in Assonet for general practice (I still travel from Boston to see her) as it's a small, clean practice and she's absolutely wonderful. It would be about a 1/2 hour drive for you (just off exit 10 on Route 24 in Assonet) but it might be worth it. Her number is (508) 644-2286‎ and it may be worth giving her a call. My parents have both been to Dartmouth Foot Specialists on Hawthorne RD, but I don't remember glowing reviews (don't really remember any reviews). The number to that facility is: (508) 991-4100. If you don't like them, I'd look in Providence as well.

Good luck! I'll come back (maybe send you a direct message) with better recommendations when I get them, but this should at least give you somewhere to start. It really is a nice area. It can be tough to adjust to (it's an isolated bunch of people, that's for sure and tough nuts to crack), but once you do it can be great. If you want advice on finding things to do (restaurants, museums, galleries, plays, concerts etc), I can help there, but I'm sorry I couldn't offer more info on what you're asking about.

Wow! Thanks for all the help- this should def get me started. We've been pretty good with finding restaurants so far. My husband has been living up here in New Bedford since the winter. Truth be told, we haven't had a bad meal yet! We are SO isolated where we are living (closer to Westport than most of Dartmouth) Now that we are finally settled, I'm trying to find all of those places that, when you live somewhere for 25 years (NJ) you just KNOW where to go! Thanks again for your help!

^That's a nice area. My family has a membership to a beach in Westport (Bakers Beach, on the Horseneck stretch, but not Horseneck). It is beautiful, but I hope you like the quiet! If you're that close to Westport, I would take a ride over to Lee's Market and see if they can do something for you about the brisket. They have the best meats in the area and the butcher there may have something for you or at least know where to go. It's worth a shot.
