Hi I saw this post and was wondering if you could help me....are you familiar with the best Autism programs? I have a 10 year old high functioning son but with academic issues. We are thinking of moving when he goes to middle school. How do I find out which schools are best for him and which are affiliated or associated with NECC. Hos=w is special ed in Bedford, Newton, Southborough, Framingham? I don't even know where to start....
thank you!

For anyone looking in the western ma area, check out the May Institute (www.mayinstitute.org). Good resources for autism-related services and contacts in Western MA are Community Resources for People with Autism (www.communityresourcesforautism.org) and Family Ties (www.massfamilyties.org). Good luck!

My older two stepkids went to Bedford... I don't know about the others. One did great, the other struggled a bit... both are in their twenties now and doing great. I think it's a very expensive place to live however.

Certainly not Lowell area.

I'd say Belmont and Lexington have better programs but just because this is true blue MA does not mean there are tons of well performing towns for this kind of thing. I even seen that first hand. Some places are definitely limited.

Bedford may be nice, may have good schools but you pay, much like anywhere nice here. You are pretty much limited to slum holes in MA if you want to live cheaper.

I am very confused and scared about if she will receive any services, if she will get into in good school. How?...also Do I have to pay or the school districts do. Since its August already, How do I get my kid to be in good school. I am scared that she will miss a year. Can someone help?

palwinder22 - Will you be buying or renting when you move to MA? Generally, the best special needs services are in affluent areas where the homeowners greatly outnumber the renters. And that situation results in there being more property tax revenue available to fund the school systems and any special programs. There is really no such thing as free special needs programs. They are expensive to run and only benefit a small number of students.

I would also add that school systems tend to be better equipped to handle special needs kids in towns that have at least suburban population density levels. I've heard some bad things from parents of autistic kids about the SPED program in Dover for example which is a highly affluent town but has low population density. It sounds like there just aren't that many special needs kids in town so the town never bothered to create the infrastructure needed to handle such a program. More population density increases the likelihood that there are other special needs kids in town.

I would highly advise you to get an advocate. We tried to go it alone at first but it is a very confusing and involved process. If you can not afford one you could qualify for a free or reduced fee. Also check out the town you are interested it should have a SPEDPAC website.

On a side note special ed does not just help a few it helps society as a whole.
