Ok, Brockton isn't NEARLY as bad as you're going to hear it is. It can be plenty shady at times and there's been an issue with kids joining gangs but I've lived here my whole life and never had any problems unless I was walking around late at night and even then I've only run into trouble once or twice. Best comparison would be a mini New York, you can be in really nice rich neighborhood with big houses then you go a couple blocks over and you're in the ghetto.
The town's reputation has been hyped beyond belief by the neighboring towns and by people in Brockton themselves so I'd suggest you look around a bit and see for yourself. People from Easton were terrified of my mother cause she's from Brockton and she's a little old white lady! I can save you some time on where not to rent though. Southfield (now called Davis commons) can get pretty shady at night but from what I hear the staff is doing everything they can to clean it up and Hamilton Oaks has horrible staff.
Anything else just ask, I live here.

Sounds like the original poster wants to live near to Boston. I think for a 288-year-old single person, any suburban town would be pretty dull. I'm not so familiar with areas south of Boston, but if living near Boston, the commute would be against most traffic, right? How about Quincy? (good train into Boston)

Oh yeah, companies are turning the old abandoned factories into lofts right now. I don't know if you can rent them, you might want to find out, but the prices are good if you aren't renting and they're looking really nice. 2 of them are right next to the police station and the Brockton train station.
Lofts at SoCo: 147 Centre St. Brockton, MA

There's supposed to be more but I haven't looked into those. I don't know if they have websites up.
