An interesting watch:

"Crime is terrible here. Violent crime is three times the national average, and some of the worst offenders in Massachusetts live right here in Springfield. There’s lots of drugs and gangs and lots of kids roaming the streets without guidance."

I would not have bothered watching this, except that I spent some of my early years living on Buckingham Street off State Street. The physical city looks much the same, but the economy and population have changed drastically. I still have relatives in Springfield who stay because of a job and family loyalty. other family who left the area went to California, Oregon and the South.

I knew Springfield was a bit hood but I didn't know it was dangerous. We used to go out there on weekends when we were students at UMass Amherst. I used to go clubbing and play poker in bars then eat at the fried chicken place at 2am.

It's dangerous if you're drug-involved or gang-involved. Otherwise, no.

Springfield is fine if you aren't looking for trouble. The downtown area has come a long way. The new lighting they have on Main St. and Worthington look awesome.

Springfield is pretty dangerous in terms of your brain really totally safe feeli by anywhere but the most suburban eastern and southern fringes. Not terrible but there’s just constant petty crime and disorder throughout most of the city.
I used to go there sometimes when I was at Trinity for some clubs and I also used to go out to some schools and redo gym floors out there in the summer and stay at a motel in Chicopee.

Also used to go up to Springfield College and AIC and run track there.

It’s poor and relatively depressing but not overly blighted or what have you. It’s just a lot of poverty and working class people. Car break in, petty theft, tools and copper stolen from construction sites, stores with security guards, take your back pack off policies, poorly maintained properties. That’s what I heard from people who lived there or had worked sites there before. That’s what I saw.

But it’s pretty affordable, somewhat walkable, and seems predictable. I could live there and probably prefer it to Lawrence or Fitchburg or even maybe Brockton. More space, slower pace of life (So it seems), but still familiar. The real thing is there’s no energy/vitality and there no real “nice neighborhood” just at best decent lower middle class stable neighborhoods with nothing to do. Most of the rest is just underachieving areas for most of the city.

It's not. It's 50% more violent than Boston, but like anywhere, if you aren't buying or selling drugs or people, it's extremely safe.

That video didn't even look that bad. If you aren't dealing drugs, then you aren't going to have a problem.

If you want to see some rough neighborhoods, watch some videos on youtube by "CharlieBo313". Some of the neighborhoods he walks through are really rough.

CharlieBo has gone to Boston and providence.

Hood Time is another one.. hes done Worcester and Lawrence. Lawrence definitely looks the worst, but Fitchburg is one city in MA i think looks terrible.
