Oops.. you were asking about Sep 2008. I think you said your daughter was born Dec 2003. Many countries count age 1 the day after they are born. However, in US, you count age 1 a year after you are born.

For 2008-2009 school year which start in Sep 2008, you child has to be born on or before October 1st, 2003. Hence, your daughter is NOT qualified.

Age 0 - October 1st, 2003
Age 1 - October 1st, 2004
Age 2 - October 1st, 2005
Age 3 - October 1st, 2006
Age 4 - October 1st, 2007
Age 5 - October 1st, 2008

Thanks, smarty for the breakup. I now get it (atlast!!! ).

Will schools relax this criteria? I mean if I ask the principal to make an assessment & take her, will they do it? My daughter though 4 can write all the alphabets, has started on cursive writing and can read too. I don't want to get her bored sitting @ home or in the day care doing stuff she's already knows.

What's the best way out? Suggestions pls.

I would email the Superintendent of the school system. In your case, since you're coming from outside the US, and it sounds as though your daughter has the skills necessary for first grade, some will consider an assessment.
I don't know where exactly you're moving but if you do a search for the town or city, you will find a link to the school system and be able to contact the Supe directly.

As you mention, it is a case by case based. I have no idea who will make those exceptions. It is a battle for you to fight. Many of my friends has decided on an easy route. Go private. Private school.

I also know that schools are easier to convince about jumping grades after 1st grade as it is much easier to evaulate a child as they get older. Again, it is individual case based. I would not worry about it until you figure out what town to live first.
