My husband and I are considering relocating to the Springfield area from Chicago. I have heard that it is difficult for elementary school teachers to find jobs in this area. There is more supply than demand. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Yes and no.

There are fewer jobs in the higher status suburbs, but you will find good prospects in the Springfield Public Schools (where my spouse teaches). Springfield schools aren't as bad as their reputation; and the suburban schools aren't as good as their reputation.

Springfield is an inner-city school system, not without city problems. But, they have a lot of innovative programs and are a leader in in-house teacher training & development, if you need something for MA certification, or want administrator training.

If you have middle/high school certification in math, science or sped, you're golden in Mass.

Generally, you need a masters, Mass certification in elementary, and preferably full professional status. You can easily find the SPS website by searching, with online applications and human resources info.

Thank you so much for your reply. It was helpful. I will look into the Springfield Public Schools system. I've worked in the Chicago Public schools and nicer suburbs and I agree with your statements regarding reputation of school systems.

You're very welcome.

The head of Human resources for SPS is Lucy Perez. If you have any trouble finding the SPS website for applications, or the Mass DOE site, etc, pm me and I'll get a link for you.

Best of luck!
