Hi,

Moving to MA this summer, with work near Burlington Mall. Daughter will go to 7th grade - academically high-achiever and active in choir, drama and dancing. Other two kids in Boston area colleges. Would appreciate advice comparing nearby towns such as Lexington, Winchester, Concord, Belmont, Weston, Acton, Wellesley and Sudbury.

Our criteria are: great middle and high schools, short commute, affordable (< $1M house), newer low-maintenance house, and asian-friendly.

thanks,

You should add Wayland to your list.

Lexington is the best, but you will not find new built home in your price range. You can get well renovated older colonial. Lexington has one of the biggest Asian contingent and school population in the area. Around 28% of students in the middle school are of Asian ancestry.

Acton would fit your criteria best. Acton is 20% Asian, good schools and a very welcoming town. You could have any home available for sale here for your budget including newer construction. Burlington and Lexington are also Asian friendly. Lexington tends towards older historic homes. Burlington has the most new construction of the these three towns, but not ranked as highly for the school system as Acton and Lexington.

I live in a town close to Bedford and do a lot of my shopping there (Whole Foods, Marshalls). Bedford is not international and not really an overflow alternative to Lexington, like Arlington. Diversity-wise there is a small AA population employed at Hanscom AB. Bedford is more similar to Billerica, Tewksbury, the more backwoods parts of Burlington and Woburn. Although part of Lexington spills over the highway, the physical barrier of the highway along with the air force base is one of the detractors from Bedford becoming a sub-suburb of Lexington.

I disagree, based on the OP's criteria...

Thanks for participating in the poll and adding useful comments here. I also found out that some while Acton allows middle-school students to take high-school math classes, Lexington does not. Any experience with math acceleration in these two or other school districts (listed above)? - Thanks.

another vote for Bedford.

great schools, great community, great access to a lot of awesome things (nature trails, shopping, boston, concord, lex etc) at a slightly more affordable price than lex/concord.
