My family is strongly considering moving to Maryland next year and we are torn between wanting to be close to the water in Anne Arundel or moving closer to friends in Howard County. I am told that Howard County has better schools but is there some place in AA that is comparable? I have heard that Serverna Park is good, but how good is it compared to the schools in Howard? I would appreciate some advice on this. Also, my wifes job would likely be in Rockville, MD. Is that commutable by public transportation from Serverna Park? Thanks.

I would recommend Howard County just for the schools. And really, it's only an additional 20-30 minutes from the water. There's no public transportation from Severna Park to Rockville. There is a MARC station in Odenton, some 10 miles away, and that offers a very roundabout way to Rockville in that you must first ride into DC and then get on another MARC train (or the Metro Red Line) and head to Rockville. It would actually probably take less time to drive, although it would be an awful commute regardless. Commuting is another benefit of living in Howard as opposed to Anne Arundel as you can shave off significant time (dependning on where in Howard you were living) from the commute.

Thanks for the information. We recently looked at parts of Ellicott City, Glenelg and Glenwood and love it. I think we are going to try to focus on that area.

I would chose Howard County, I love Ellicott City, check it out. And you are close to DC or Baltimore, for shopping, culture etc.

Thank you. Ellicott City is one area that we are looking into. We heard it has great schools too.

I'm an AA County fan, you can't beat Annapolis, but Western Howard county will be a better commute and better schools as well. Ellicott City is a good choice as well - there's a little more to do in that area. Once you get past Clarksville in Western Howard County it's just big homes on big lots, without much to do...

Severna Park has excellent schools as well, and is similar economically to Glenwood/Glenelg. Also a good choice if you can stomach the commute
