We want to take a weekend trip to a beach with our son this summer. I know how crowded the DE/MD ocean beaches can be in season, so I was wondering if there are any beaches on the Chesapeake Bay that you could recommend (Eastern shore side is ok, too). Thank you.

Welcome to North Beach, MD

Beach with Boardwalk and Pier. Close to a couple restaurants, Tastee-Freez, Cold Penguin Ice Cream. No lodging in town

Town of Chesapeake Beach (MD) - Home

Beach is a hike from the road, somewhat isolated, no restrooms like North Beach has. Lodging is Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa. Several restaurants.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources - Maryland Park Service

Near Annapolis. North Beach and Chesapeake Beach are about 25 miles south of Annapolis.

All three have an entry fee.

EDIT: Now is the time of the year when jellyfish start coming in. We aren't warning people yet but the good times will likely be over in the next few days. Jellyfish can make a day at the beach miserable. Homegrown treatment for a jellyfish sting is meat tenderizer or vinegar on the sting wound. Jellyfish are typically worse on the eastern side of the Bay as the water is a bit saltier there.

Thanks for the great information. Given that they're so close to Annapolis, we'd probably stay there and go down to the beach for a day.

North Beach has gotten ridiculous with the non-county entrance fees. I used to go all the time, but to me the prices just aren't worth it anymore.

The jellyfish net is up. There are a few but not many yet.

If you hit the link I posted earlier you'll get to the Town home page. There's a further link to fees. If I remember it's $10/adult (12 and up) and $6/kid (3-11).

If the jellyfish get too bad, there's always the Chesapeake Beach waterpark:

Thursday's at the corner of 7th and Bay.
Neptune's at the corner of 1st and Chesapeake.
Both are moderately priced.
Dairy Freeze on Chesapeake.

Westlawn Inn at the corner of 7th and Chesapeake, fine dining.

In Chesapeake Beach there's Trader's, Rod 'n' Reel, Smokey Joe's, McDonald's, Subway, Papa John's, Domino's, Crooked I.

I forgot one beach:

Breezy Point & Campground (http://www.co.cal.md.us/residents/parks/getinvolved/ - broken link)
