"Little Italy" is a nice neighborhood on the south part of Millinocket. The Mill was built by Italian stonemasons before concrete was common.

Hi Zeke48!
I grew up in Millinocket and a lot has changed here, but what has not changed is that it is a wonderful place to live especially if you are looking to retire. I got divorced a few years ago but I have found a new man and now live with him in East Millinocket.

We moved up here Fall 2011 with the same situation as Zeke48: retiring and wanting to buy an affordable (for us) house. We had been in Portland, OR and then NJ -- both completely out of our range. We found the perfect house for $20,000(!), only needing exterior work; taxes are minor (~$800/yr); and Millinocket has enough of what we need, i.e. grocery stores (Hanniford's & IGA), a library, post office, and 4(!) thrift stores and tons of yard sales. We'll always be considered "from away" by people who've been here for generations, but there are enough friendly people to balance out the unfriendly. The town's very low key & unpretentious, and Residents obviously care a lot about it (upkeep, politics, helping in emergencies, social gatherings). The town's in a transition period with the mills going out and young people & downtown businesses leaving; even with the new "torrified wood" facility & industrial park coming, it's not clear what the future holds for Millinocket. Hopefully, as more people move here, they'll bring new ideas, energy, etc. to the mix!

I was in Millinocket today. I was able to buy .22 ammunition off the shelf. Nobody had to go find "the lady with the keys". Millinocket has a Dunkin Donuts. I visited the new Tractor Supply store which was nice and got some stuff not generally available in regular hardware stores. The multiple schools in the area are finally beginning to consider consolidating to save money.

If you come to Millinocket, bring your portable job with you or be a retiree with a stable income. Oh, and Welcome. Maine needs people.

The Millinocket area is gorgeous, just stunning. Great outdoors activities. The location is great too: right in between the County and the rest of Maine.
We like it there and vacation there, great people.
I think that the area has a longterm future---maybe not the boom times of old, but take the above qualities and add cheap housing and you have a place that people will be interested in.
