I guy came by the house and delivered to me a flyer. He works for the 'Penobscot county Roads and Mapping Department'.

Apparently the contract for our curbside trash pickup is changing.

We will now be using the Old Town dump for recycling, metals, and anything that does not fit in a garbage can.

He went on to tell me that the semi-annual curbside pickup of metal and the regular recycling pickup will stop this week. We had no idea we had any semi-annual curbside pickup of metal, or recycling.

He said that it all gets announced in the local newspaper, but because this is a big change they were delivering a flyer house-to-house.

Now I wonder which paper is he thinking about?

When we moved here and first made the phone calls to see how trash pickup worked, there was no mention of recycling or metal pickup.

We have never seen recycling bins in front of our neighbor's homes, only trash cans. So we had services offered to us that seem to have been secrets.

And one more interesting point; 'Roads and Mapping' is in charge of trash? That seems odd to me.

When we got here, we spoke with neighbors about trash pickup, and we called the garbage company. We did not call the county 'roads and mapping' folks, so maybe that was our mistake.

Who handles trash pickup in other counties?

We just have private pick ups here in DI/Stonington, (at the whopping cost of $3.50/week, no bag limit!) and of course anyone can take their own stuff to the respective "transfer stations".

Now I am confused, I live in Old Town and have curb side pick up for recycling, are they stopping that? I hope not!

The flyer does not say if this effects OT residents. I assume that if you had not been notified, then it would not effect you. But then again we had not been notified that we had recycling available to us, nor semi-annual metal pickup. So I dont know.

The flyer does say that we must pay all fees in advance at the OT city hall.

Since we are not OT residents, we previously had a higher flat fee to go into OT to use their dump. Now we can pay a lower fee to get a 'dump sticker' [$25/year] that would allow us to go there.

'white goods'/ metal [lawnmowers, snow blowers, microwaves, AC units, Pcs, furnaces, frigs, etc] all cost $10 @

TVs are $12 to $30 depending upon size.

Scrap metal is free.

Tires cost $2 to $50 @ depending on size.

Wood furniture $2/yard, 1 yard allowed/week.

Demo debris is $2 for the first yard, $30/yard thereafter.

Brush is free.

When the guy was here, he did ask me what Argyle residents had been doing with their metal appliances since we did not know that metal pickup was scheduled twice a year for us. I pointed to my backhoe.

We get to take all our own stuff to the dump, unless you want to pay somebody to take it for you. It doesn't cost much for pick up I hear.

Refrigerators and washing machines make good bait tanks.

A drum from a gas dryer makes a wonderful fire pit.

The motor/transmission from a washing machine make a fairly good boat anchor.

We have a frigerator laid down serving as a planter.
