Thought it would be fun to see what everyone thinks about the town they're living in....maybe that would be fun for you Mainers and helpful to those of us who want to be Mainers and are in the search mode.
I hope this isn't duplication of other threads.
• no crime
• hike, ski, snowshoe for miles without seeing a person or house
• if you or a neighbor are in need, there is always someone willing to help
• fishing and hunting in the back yard
• some of the most incredible views around each corner
• strong family values
• a sense of pride in the community
• swimming, boating and the outdoors

Here: amazing people There: amazing people
Here: mild winters There: mild summers
Here: a complete lack of the usual amenities like health care
There: No more driving two hours for health care, decent grocery store, movie theatre, good restaurants, etc
Here: lots of the outdoors to explore There: lots of the outdoors to explore
Here: learning Spanish out of necessity There: people who can carry on a conversation in English
Hum. Seems I won't be leaving a lot of the best things about this town behind when we move.

Oh, yeah. I almost forgot about that. All those BEAUTIFUL old houses! All eras, all architectural styles, in all stages of condition, many of them affordable. I loved just driving along the streets and roads, and just looking at all of them. Is there an historic preservation group in Calais? I heard something about some kind of celebration regarding the Holmes house when I was there.
Funny you should say that. My husband want to move to Calais because he likes the idea of a very small town on the Canadian border. He is trying to entice me by saying he would buy me this house (http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/18-Lafayette-St_Calais_ME_04619_1101662410 - broken link). Which would be great but I don't think there is anything there either of us could do for work there.
If either of the forum members who are soon moving to Calais by this house - let me know!!
I live north of Bangor, I work in Bangor, and a group of people all have camps...I live in what they try to escape to.
