I am contacting Senators Collins and Snowe. I think the speculators have driven lobster prices higher. LOL.

Hannaford's on the Back Cove had lobster for $9.99/lb a few days ago. A month ago they were going for $10.99/lb. Last August/September they had them for $4.99/lb.

K-luv, lobsters move in closer to shore as the water temps increase. Right now the lobsters are still a ways out and moving in to shed later next month and August. The guys have to travel further out to catch them now, making them less available.

The Mermaid is right (of course) I'll also add that for some reason when the lobsters do make it in to the warmer waters they do not eat when moulting. For a week you'll go from catching them in close to catching nothing and a week later you'll start picking up shedders. Those weeks when they are not eating are the weeks the price really spikes. By the 4th of July there are some nice lobsters around! I always caught the biggest ones in close around the 4Th of July. They were shedders but they were 2-3 lbs.

In Manhattan, they charge $25-40 for one lobster roll. I tried one once on the lower end of that range and it was bad. Nothing like in New England.

Lobster here across the Maple Curtain is running $6.99 a lb at our supermarket. I was tempted today but went with a nice steak instead as the kids and DW bought me a new grill/smoker for fathers day and thought I ought to try it out. Turns out my wife (who's a nurse) got called in to work and it was cool and raining so the kids opted for some homemade mac and cheese instead. I'll have my steaks after work tomorrow - rain or shine. I'll have some Maine lobster when we are there in a couple of weeks.
