We are in Midcoast Maine, about 1/2 mile from the shore, and we sometimes get into the 80's in the summer (which really is just July and August). It gets that warm about 7 or 10 days per year.
We have a small window unit that we put in a bedroom window late June, and take down sometime in early Sept; but we only use it anywhere from 4 to about 14 nights all year.

I’ve been a Yarmouth resident for 25+ years now. I have air conditioning and wouldn’t have it any other way. My rule of thumb is when the dew point is projected to be above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, my air conditioning kicks on. Dew point is different versus relative humidity. In my mind the dew point is a better guide as to whether I will have that “sticky feeling” inside the house. It can be 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a 68 degree dew point and feel absolutely gross; versus 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a 45 degree dew point and the apparent air feeling relatively “crisp and cool”. More and more places around here - both new and existing housing stock - have either window units, heat pumps, or central units. In my housing market, it’s almost expected now.

Being near the coast in the summer provides a lovely cool breeze. Summer of 2018 was the hottest summer I remember. We've never had AC and rarely had any complaints. I had the windows open and three fans circulating air on me at night during July and August. I know some people got window units for their bedrooms so they could sleep more comfortably.
