Another idea - if you have any handy skill at all the Midcoast area is in dire need of people like HandyMen, just general fixit guys or gals or people willing to become generator techs, painters, furnace techs, etc. This area is super low on reliable people that can do any kind of repair jobs - either working for themselves or for others.

You could work for yourself as a general, all-around HandyMan and easily make $20+/hr if you are reliable and honest. So many people here in these positions either have drug problems and therefore are unreliable and inefficient or they want to work very little and overcharge as a result. And there are a lot of older people here (and younger people - self included) who are willing to pay for help from capable people but can't find reliable and trustworthy help.

I really appreciate all the thoughtful replies to this thread. I like this bit of lateral thinking above, and it has crossed my mind before. I am surprised to hear that there is the same shortage up in Maine that we have here in Ct. I have crossed Bangor off my list, and New Hampshire. I am planning to take some time off to go to Maine early next year.
