I had mine done two weeks ago. He went over it with a fine tooth comb. I'm glad I didn't know ahead of time what he'd be looking for because I'd have worried. It's 11 years old and has 121,000 miles. There's one small problem to fix that had nothing to do with inspection. I feel better knowing it's as safe as it is.

just had my truck done and my car is due next month .
The mechanic said "if it came with the vehicle. It's got to work"
I've had them check the wipers before, but this was the first time they even checked the washer fluid. they can fail you for either one according to the book. They even checked the little flapper under the gas cap to see if it had been removed. The inspection took about 40 minutes, probably because I kept asking questions..It's a 2000 silverado and all I had fixed was a day time running light bulb. Under $20.00 total bill

Oh wow, do you still have vehicle inspections in Maine? Guess I must of slept through this one.
We use to have them in Florida many moons ago, but not anymore. Learned something else new.

We have to have vehicle inspections up here. If we didn't more people would be killed by parts falling off cars than in actual accidents. I think the average Maine car is about 12 years old with about 175,000 miles. Don't forget that we like to cover the roads up here with a healthy coating of frame and underbody solvent (salt). If you have never seen a car or truck literally destroyed from the frame up by salt then you owe yourself a trip to any junkyard in Maine and have a look around. Before the manufacturers began galvanization, undercoating, and using epoxy based acrylic paints, cars up here were lucky to last until they were paid off (four years ).Some manufacturers were worse than others. I won't mention names but the phrase Found On Road Dead comes to mind. Back then it was nothing to see the bottoms of car doors rusted completely through in two years. After four years many folks would put a wooden flat bed body on their truck (if it still had a frame)as the bed was completely dissolved.
Brake lines take a bad hit too with the salt and will corrode to the point of failure in 4-5 years. If you're lucky enough to live near the ocean you get that salty humidity all year round! We used to know at least one local gas station where the guy with the inspection license woud sell you a sticker for $25.00 (which was alot back then). Or you could use the tried and true method of putting a canoe on the roof so the end came down in the center of the windshield and hid the area where the sticker was supposed to be.

Are you serious?? I've never lived in a state without vehicle inspections.
Learn something new everyday.

Maine is the only state that I have lived in that DID require an inspection. I think there is only a minority of states that still require an inspection left.

I have lived in states that required a smog inspection, but not a safety inspection.

When we lived in Scotland they required a rust inspection.

Inspections are just another way for this state to tax the heck out of us.
