Niantic is the one I was thinking about and was confused by the "Waterford CT" address I got from the goo-gul. An oyster stew that was more oyster than stew YUM!! They were almost empty at lunch time but at dinner time you had to wait in a long queue.

My Dw grew up living in a house on the Niantic riverfront, they have a pier and sailboats. A great area!

We have a home in Norwich [between Foxwoods and Mohegan sun/moon].

I remember seeing the shopping mall in New London, formerly thriving, empty and desolate with most store fronts closed and papered over after the indian casinos opened up.

I remember taking AMTRAK to Atlantic City and upon arrival the train crew advising passengers strongly to not walk the two blocks between the train station and the boardwalk and instead take a cab.

Casinos really change things...

Do you mean the two twin strip malls that face each other from either side of the I-95 freeway?

The 'Tu-guys' indoor mall was converted into a strip mall and is thriving on the North side of the freeway. They may have papered the windows while remodeling.

The Sears strip mall on the South side of the freeway is now a Burlington and thriving.

West of town [but still within New London] is 'crystal mall'.

Immediately as each casino opened business at crystal mall was down. Then after folks had all explored the casinos, it came back up.

Across the road from Crystal mall they have expanded and built another strip mall. And behind Crystal mall, are also two new strip malls.

Casinos don't stop residents from needing shoes.

The area has a lot of immigrants now. Both casinos import most of their workers. Once they ran through all of the local work-force, they began hiring in NYC, Puerto Rico and Yugoslavia. Bringing a lot of trained and experienced casino workers into the area. Rent levels have gone up, and the local schools are packed.

Since EB shutdown most of their shifts and laid off 5,000 welders and pipe-fitters the area was really depressed. Then the Pfizer napalm plant shut down to a skeleton crew, did not help. The Subase lost 25 subs and shutdown most of the schools that ran on-base, the base is now down to a very small clusters of schools and only six subs. A lot of the Federal money that once supported the area is gone.

The casinos have been bringing in a lot of money from neighboring states.

The renters in my apartment building in Norwich are all casino employees.

Lead me not into temptation; I can find it myself

Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.

Shouldn't that be:

"Lack of planning on *your* part does not constitute an emergency on *my* part"?
