In addition to being a RN I also run a small home improvement company here in Ohio. I have been doing this for almost 20 years. It has provided me a nice living. Is the Maine market saturated with a high number of qualified contractors? I have a perfect record in Ohio, and also provide financing etc? Just wondering about the possibility of continuing this trade as well.

There are a lot of niche businesses in Maine. Passive solar is big here and sliding glass windows are the perfect replacement window for passive solar. I have one on my south facing wall in the upstairs bedroom. It warms the room nicely. It may be called a "door" in the catalog. but nobody has ever been through that door and I hope nobody ever needs to go through it.

RNs are in high demand in Maine. The salary scale is lower than places like Connecticut, but the cost of living is lower here and most people think the lifestyle is better.

Plenty of "backyard contractors" here. Most work very cheaply too. From $10 to $20 an hour. I think I'd stick with the RN job if I were you......

I figured as much as that is the case most everywhere. Only reason I asked is my supplier (nationwide) also has a branch in Portland and claims there is a shortage of qualified contractors who offer financing in the Maine area. Thanks for the insight.

As somebody who has been self employed for decades, I don't recommend that any self employed person go into competition with Master Card and Visa. If the customer can't afford to pay the credit card company he can't afford to pay you.

I am a indirect lender. I do not hold my own notes.

There is always room for a good contractor....particularly for smaller jobs and during the summer months.
