Today on the way to work our radiator blew and generated a large crack, so in the midst of mounds of snow we were overheated and our car unusable. It was very cold this morning and we live in a VERY rural part of Washington County. My husband hiked 1/2 mile to the closest house for help. A nice older lady immediately let my husband in to use the phone and let him warm back up before he made the trek back to me and the car to wait for the tow truck. While waiting, other cars stopped to offer the use of cell phones or rides. This would never have happened in Texas or Ca where we used to live. People here look out for the other and there kindness is one of the very best reasons for living in this most beautiful place.

Geez, it does happen in California. People out here aren't ogres, you know.
I lived in Los Angeles for 20+ years and have broken down on more than one occassion-and AAA was my hero there. I know exactly what CA is like and it is not the same place it was in the 70's and 80's. left in 2005 and only go back to see family. Trust me Maine is different-if you don't live here, you may not realize just how different-it is nothing like CA.

I lived in Maine for 55 years. My family has lived there dating from the early 1800's. I'm glad you like it. Moderator cut: So you've both now established that your experiences may vary according to the actual people you run into. Let's not escalate things by trying to put words into another poster's mouth
There are some wonderful people here, and there are some jerks. There is no monopoly on either regardless of where you call home.

Looking for a simpler way of life and back to gardening and hunting for food etc. I hope there are people out there that can tell me more positive things.
It all sounded good until I got to the part about "hunting for food." I do not understand what is serene, simple, pleasing, or relaxing about killing animals! Or did I read that wrong and you are hunting for food like berries, edible plants, wild food like nuts?
We would have deer starving to death if the herds weren't culled.
