Gelatin is a common ingredient in foods because it is so versatile. It can be used as a gelling agent (as in Jell-O), as a thickener, an emulsifier, and a stabilizer. You'll find it in a variety of foods, from yogurt to chewing gum. Here is a list of some other foods that commonly contain gelatin:
  • gummy bears
  • sour cream
  • cream cheese
  • cake icing and frosting
  • marshmallows
  • soups, sauces and gravies
  • canned ham and chicken
  • corned beef
  • sausage
Gelatin is even used to make the coating for pills that makes them easier to swallow. It's also in ice-cream*, meat aspics, cosmetics, lozenges, and ointments.
If you avoid processed foods you can easily avoid gelatin in foods.

Molly, after dissecting a cat my daughter lugged our cats around constantly. The cats were not thrilled. Me? I pushed my worm across the table freshman year and said, "Jimmmmy......?"

There isn't much on that list that we eat as a processed/convenience food. I make all our soups from scratch, cake frosting always from scratch, we don't do marshmallow anything, certainly not gummy bears. I only get the rare sausage order fresh from the butcher. Looks like we are in good shape avoiding gelatin. I knew there was a reason I cook from scratch!!

we don't do a lot of that either....marshmallows once in a while for rice krispie treats, more so in the summer for fires on the beach...probably my biggest item from the list is cream cheese--I make cheesecakes, and I love bagels....I do use sour cream for some cakes--there's a coffee cake I make with it that is to die for! but most everything here (soups, sauces, gravies, frosting etc) is from scratch too. I don't even know that cooking that way was as much a real thought as a learned behavior!

We have a place near work that does sandwiches and they have a side called fish eyes...which of course is tapioca and for the record it creeps me out and I won't touch the stuff!

OMG! Maple fudge! Do you by any chance know how to make maple sugar candies? And yes, I have real maple syrup standing at the ready for the task. Well, for that matter, I'd like to know how to make maple sugar, too. (hint)

I will admit I do lick the plate after eating home made pancakes or french toast just so I can capture those last few drops of pure maple syrup and not let any bit go to waste
