Hi, my name is Amanda, I am 21, and I have lived in Southern Cali all my life, particularly the Inland Empire (which is by Palm Springs). My husband and I are looking to move to Maine with our daughter, but we're nervous b.c. we hear that the East coast is humid, whereas where I live on West coast, it is dry. I hate the humidity, the feeling of going out for 5 minutes, and feeling like you just got out the shower, but it is really -icky -and -it- makes -you want- to -take- a- shower feeling, lol. SO I was wondering if everything I heard on the humidity was true. Also do ou guys have UPS out there? LOL. I know it is an odd question, but my hubby works there, and he'd need to put in a transfer, so that is why I was wondering. While I am at it, what are some good towns, that are pretty safe, downtown area, good schools (would love private school), and maybe that has a mall? lol. ANy input would be totally awesome! Thanks!

Yes, we have humidity here. Not as intense as Florida but it still gets very humid. If you want to escape it, you are better off staying on the coast.
Yes, we have UPS. Have FedEx too.
The only malls of any size and substance are in Portland and Bangor.
Your key to all this would be where UPS decides to place your husband in the state. You wouldn't want to move to, lets say Holden, and have him working out of Portland. That is a 3 hr drive one way.

Alison's right....the humidity here can be icky. I can't tell you how bad it is in comparison to other places, because I've only ever lived in Maine. When it gets too sticky here in Calais we head to the lake or the beach, or to Eastport. I'm not one for temps above 80, and I don't like humidity at all, but it doesn't feel oppressive to me as much as uncomfortable.

Default visit first....

Hi!

It almost sounds like you haven't visited first (if you are asking if there's UPS here....) From southern California, the snow and winter is going to be more of a shock/adjustment for you than the humid summers would be.

I would plan a visit for both Jan/Feb and for August before you decide to
move here. The good news regarding humidity is that it doesn't last long - it's not a year round thing; and the nights are cool.

I have lived on both coasts, the real humidity issue is the Southern East coast and the gulf coast.

I do not think that the humidity here ever goes above 90%.

It may spike up to 80% right before a rain storm, but that is about it.

The thing is that folks become accustomed to it. In Arizona they may go from 10% to 30% and to a local when it is 30% it 'feels' terrible. Whereas in Virginia they get used to 95% humidity so they don't complain until it hovers at 98% for a few days.

We really have not noticed much humidity here.

Humidity in the summer here in WV is above 100% and it feels like a wet sauna all the time. The small amount of humidity in Maine, when it occurs and it's not all the time, is like no humidity to me.

Hello,

Count me in for Eastport to escape the heat. My husband and I visited and stayed at a B&B in Eastport for 7 days in August 07 to escape the heat and humidity of Jax, FL. It was a great relief and we had a most enjoyable time getting acquainted with the city and friendly folks of Eastport. We are from the TN hills...born and raised...no malls and the frills of City Living...felt right at home talking to everyone...my husband likes it so much he bought a cottage. Oh my gosh!!

What is it like in December?

Hey Amanda, I Live In Ca,but Did Grow Up In Ma And Have Been To Me Many Times; It Will Feel Very Humid When You Are Not Use To It And Imo ,it's Not For Everyone. Some People Never Notice Humidity, But Others Do And It Affects Their Day...also, I Do Agree To Go To Me First, maybe Late In The Summer Or In Dead In The Winter To See If The Diverse Weather Is Something You Want To Sign Up For.also, There Is A Culture Difference Between Me And S .cal.not As Many Conveniences.things You Need To Check Out Before Making The Move.

Several of us have homes in Eastport - which one did your husband buy?

Default eastportme

MEnME (my spouse, is having cookie troubles) can't login. We bought a cottage @ 2 Prince
Avenue. I see quite a few posts relating to Washington Co., and Eastport. Wonderful people and beautiful scenery!
