I recently relocated to Maine and have an interview on Vinalhaven Island in a few days. I drove to Rockland today to familiarize myself with the location of the ferry but could use any helpful tips you can offer to make my first trip fuss-free. I will be parking my car and riding as a walk-on. Thanks in advance for your help!

Enjoy the trip. If you're subject to seasickness, stay topside in the fresh air, don't sit inside the ferry, and keep your eyes on the horizon, not on the waves. Since it's a job interview, save the dramamine for the trip back. It might make you drowsy. The ferry terminal on Vinalhaven is a short walk from town. Maine island communities tend to be a little more insular than mainland towns, but Vinalhaven has a large summer population that helps break down the barriers. What field are you in, if I may ask?

Park at the Ferry terminal or off a side street if terminal parking is full. Your vehicle will be safe! Buy your ticket in the terminal. I would show up 20 minutes early. You can check the schedule online at www.maine.gov/mdot/mfsf/vinalhaven.htm.

If it's anything like Saint John, just park in the lot. Even in Saint John my car never had issues, I'd leave it for a week.
