Bath has all the advantages you note, plus an authentic Irish pub, Byrnes. Plus Portland is almost oversupplied with great brew pubs and locally made beer.

BTW, we went to the hockey game in Portland a couple of weeks ago. Nearly a full house, and our guys won! Had a great time. Now baseball season has started with the Pirates first home game last night.

I think it is hard to quantify the feel of a community in a paragraph.

You need to come to Maine to visit. Spend a few days hanging out in Madawaska and in Calais, in Eastport and in Bath. Before you could really say which suits you best.

If your big move is a few years away, then I suggest that come out here once or twice a year, for a week each time and rent a cabin in each community.

fort kent may be another town to look at-
just know whether ft kent, or madawaska, they can have very severe winters and a shorter summer season

calais and eastport will usually have a milder winter than madawaska,

in severe snowstorms, Ive seen them close the roads down up north
the upside- madawaska is up in aroostook county-big sky country-if you like the outdoors-atv's snowmobiles-its a great place
not much population-not many tourists in the summer-very little traffic-

calais and eastport are awesome areas, I was in eastport this past monday and like the area-

all three areas have a small town feel- I keep to myself, like my privacy- dont NEED to feel accepted in different areas-but some folks do, if you move into any of these towns, yes, the neighbors will be curious, but you will be surprised by how helpful they may be.

In "the valley" it use to be predominently french catholics- maybe not so much today-

I use to visit most towns up north every month for 16 years, not the same as livin there, but as an "outsider" I never felt like one- the french folks are very decent.

so, either of these towns would be a good pick-you just have to get the "feel" yourself

Well thanks again all, but I'm leaning toward Calais & Eastport (for now but I'll change I'm sure ). The reasons; well both are warmer in winter than Mada. I'll freeze there & be snowed in too vs coastal fog & more rain, yes? lol

Also, it is closer to larger cities like Portland or St John, NB & thus alot better location. I still like Bath or around there too, as it is proximal even moreso to Portland (than either other county) & things/services to do such Trader Joe's, AHL hockey, concerts, etc.

After all this though, then my OCD looks at factors like Cancer rates & Heart Dis. rates, & in Cancer rates, Washington county loses as it has higher rates than Aroostook. But in heart dis. rates it wins, as Aroostook has the worst Heart Dis. rate in ME. I guess not an ample supply of docs to serve rural areas?

Ok well do you guys agree on my ideas, & the weather also?

Well... just before Easter, a fox or something killed my coon "Abby". She's been with us for 7 yrs. She is sadly missed each day and night I step out on my deck. They are a strong and faithful pet -the Maine coon cat..

Oh no I'm devasted hearing this. I can't imagine how you must feel. I have a girl that is Hyperthyroid, so we need to take her for treament yet.

But to lose your kitty is unfathomable. I am deeply sorry to have heard this, & pray God Blesses you & her in Heaven. She's at Rainbow Bridge, I'm confident of that, so you WILL see her again.

Thanks so much for sharing & replying.

Yeah I know, but my heart says Eastport (some romantic cool notion, I guess, to live in the coastal community vs inland away from water - doesn't make sense I know but it seems so neat) vs my head/brain that say the "logical" move is where services, activities, hopping, entertainment, etc. are best. Thus Bath wins on sanity, & Eastport on insanity (or more than 2 glasses of wine ).

Tonite 3 glasses has Eastport in the lead yet I know once daylite comes my sanity will return though - will it prevail? lol
