This all depends on how big the tree is and how close it is to something. I took down three birch trees about 40 ft tall that were close to my house (one leaning towards my house) quite easily. I just threw a rope over the highest branch I could and had a friend bend it in the direction I wanted it to fall. I then undercut and cut it to fall that way. The whole thing for three trees took about 30 minutes. However, had they been maples with trunks of two feet in diameter, I wouldn't have touched them.
