Hi There,

My wife and I will be moving to Maine within the next two months. We're currently looking at living on Little Deer Isle. We've visited Maine several times over the past few years but have never been to the Island. Can anybody give me some opinions on the community or island itself?

My wife will actually be driving to Bangor for work. I've been told that it's about an hour drive. Is that pretty accurate and can anybody comment on the ease of the commute? She currently has a commute of 180 miles so I think she can handle an hour drive.

Thanks for the help!

Wow. Anything in particular that makes it such a long drive since it's only about 45 miles away?

DeerIsleSmile is right. It's about 52 miles, if you Google it, and it is about an hour and a half. The roads are quite winding. I would not look forward to that drive in the winter or with summer traffic.

Mapquest will tell you about the same, though they come up with an hour and 20 minutes, since I did it right from the LDI Visitor Center, not the back of the island. It takes so long because it's a route (or one of several) that run through several small villages, and many speed zones that are 25 or 30 miles an hour.

Lil' Deer is a nice spot with nice people. The bridge to the island is still being worked on, expect delays. The hour plus commute will expensive, and yes, it will take more than an hour.

Hmmm.... you could cut a little time and expense I think living in one of those nice coastal nearby towns... something near Blue Hill maybe. Geez, there's one I'm thinking of just on the tip of my tongue... darn, can't quite think of the name. AustinB you know which one I'm thinking of....

Really though, there are some nice towns that would be easier on the commute. Gas prices aren't going down, and winter driving in rural areas isn't great. Coastal Maine is prone to freezing rain too when the rest of the state might be expecting snow. It can take a lot of fun out of winter driving! You've chosen a great area of the state though! Very beautiful!

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, the person that lives on the Island told me that it takes him 50 minutes and he drives slow. Glad I didn't take his word for it.

I've searched for some homes around the coastal area but we'll be renting and pickings are slim. We also have dogs and that limits what's available to us.

Thanks again!
