WLBZ2.com | Bangor, ME | Maine considers private prison bill

A possible new private prison to be built in Milo?

That would employ a few hundred people.

In the gubernatorial campaign the controversial Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation's largest for-profit prison operator, spent $25,000 on behalf of Republican candidate Paul LePage, now the governor-elect.

That possibility and the Milo prison possibility are connected. State law forbids putting Maine prisoners in a for-profit prison,

To oversee Maine's Department of Corrections, LePage chose to go as far outside the state corrections model as he could in selecting Joseph Ponte, a warden with the private corrections firm known as the Corrections Corporation of America.

Sure we'll change the law and hire a warden from CCA to make it convenient. Anyone who cares can do a little research into CCA's reputation for prisoner care.

The private prison could make a good income just from alien criminals. They need not ever house a Maine citizen.

CC of America is the company that has an exclusive contract with the state of Arizona and is financially and politically entangled with the current Governor of that state and several of her administration. Since they make money everytime a person is suspected of being an illegal alien they lobbied hard for the legislation to make it highly probable that lots of people would be going to jail. It is a money maker for all concerned.

They also have a bad record regarding provision of health care and resultant loss of life, and some security problems resulting in high profile escapes and charges of guards selling drugs to inmates.

Unfortunately since this group is well aligned with ultra-conservative politics (cozy....one hand washes the other).....I am not at all surprised our recently elected governor is interested.

Hernando County in Florida is suing the company to get out of contract.....it is shrouded in controversy. http://floridaindependent.com/7746/h...ly-run-prisons

Any one who thinks CCA or another private prison would do worse than what we already have with state run prisons needs to only read this:
Prisoner’s death shows disrespect — Maine Opinion — Bangor Daily News

or this:
Federal probe sought in Maine inmate death

This is just the latest example. It's hardly been a stellar history in Maine of state-run prisons.

They only deserve bread and water anyway. Prisoners cry and moan when their satellite TV is interrupted or their computer access is taken away. They should be making license plates and cleaning the roadways in a chain gang. Punishment should feel like punishment not an upgrade from life in the trailer park..

When it is profitable for politicians to take away citizens liberties and rights and the more they arrest the more money they make.....we all should beware.

There are some pretty wild conspiracy theories, some with pretty substantial facts, swirling around the Federal/CCA relationship and intentions. I'm all for private enterprise, but this one sounds generally like a very bad, ominous idea. Almost science fiction with a corporation deciding on Constitutional rights. Real bad.
