Maine has the highest rate of home ownership in the nation. That said, we have the lowest rate of rentals. You might better post this on the Portland forum. Over 50% of Maine's population lives within 50 miles of Portland and half of that area is water!

Not everyone seems to know that the rental availability is often low especially for a house with 4-5 bdr's.

When our previous renters threatened to leave because they thought the heat was too high(they'd come from a third floor apartment where they had 2 bdr's and had to keep the windows open to keep from cooking), they thought that we would have trouble replacing them. We just smiled. When we had an ad in the paper within a week we had more than 100 people call. Our agency begged us to pull the ad, and still the calls came. Apparently a 5 bdr house on 1.5 acres across from an Audobon Nature preserve is hard to come by. ;-)

Try craigslist. Seriously. When I was looking for a rental, rentals around the Portland area dominated the postings. I'm sure they still do. Not sure if they all meet your qualifications, but it's a good starting point.

Be wary of scammers of course, but those are easy to spot once they reply to your inquiry.
