My dream location (of places I've visited so far) would be Isle Au Haut or a house on Somes Sound on MDI. Now if only there was a need for people who aren't doctors/nurses/scientists in that area. Love Eastport for vacationing but I'd probably need more coastal amenities within 20 miles to be happy year-round.

I do want to thank mainenative73 for her info on Wells. When I was applying to jobs in Portland and Portsmouth, Wells was on my short list of places to look for a home. I certainly won't be looking at Wells again.

I am self-employed so I do the very thing the OP asks. I've lived in Lubec two springs and now will be moving to Little Deer Isle. I think the places I would love to take a house on would be Cutler or in the Wiscassett-Belfast area. If I were to stay in Maine my next destination would be creeping down the coast further. We'll see how Deer Isle treats.

Just curious, why the move? Are you a native Mainer?

Nope, I'm from Western NY. I always wanted to live in Maine. Young and with time to waste, I guess.

How far western? When I was in the service I was stationed with a guy who said he was from Upstate NY. WHen I asked where he said Ossining. No one wanted to be asociated with NYC.

Ha. Ossining is 45 minutes north of Midtown Manhattan, I would hardly call that upstate. In fact the only people who call Westchester County "upstate" are people from LI, Brooklyn and Queens. I know people like to talk about the "two Maines," but you can't imagine the divide between upstate and downstate NY.

Was this awhile back, when NYC was so dangerous? Now I don't think someone would try hard to distance themselves from NYC.

Yeah I laughed when I looked that place up no offense. That's still NYC suburbs. Although, not to age you but if this was some time ago it may have been very different back then. Even 30-40 years ago.

I'm from the last county west - my hometown is as close to Chicago as it is to NYC. The two "New Yorks" are not just a state of mind, but literally you could cut the eastern half of NYS off and call it New England and cut the western half off at about Utica/Rome and call it Midwest. NYC up there is is as foreign as Paris, we go down there as tourists. Pay admission to cross the bridge and pay high taxes to fund the military they call the NYPD.

We have a running joke (very true) that anyone who is not well-traveled in NY beyond NYC will automatically assume you are from the city if you say 'NYS'. When in reality the leatherstocking region and the southern tier are almost entirely farms and old-growth forest.

Yup, it is hilarious. That was my point. This was around 1984 and he was DEFINATELY trying to distance himself from NYC. Happens in the best of families, I guess
