Each summer we look for affodable train or railroad type things to do with the boys ages 6-13. Anyone been to the Trolley Museum? I'd appreciate input about if it's worth the drive.
Thanks!

From Raymond I'd also opt for the Gray animal farm before the trolley museum. There are also many mines around South Paris you can take kids to look for quartz crystals and other semi precious minerals.

great ideas guys! we have promised train type vehicles this time but I will be putting these others on my list for next year.
my youngest are twins and one loves things with wheels, particularly trains and the other loves animals, but especially farm animals. I was also hoping to find a real farm that allows visitors or maybe a living history museum that has a farm. Anybody been to Smiling Hill farm?

Smiling Hill is a great place to take kids. Lots of animals to see , things to climb on, displays, places to walk and the best ice cream you've ever eaten! Mandarin Orange Chocolate is my favorite!
If you do go to the Gray animal farm be sure to follow the signs to the fish hatchery adjacent to the park. Take some dimes with you to buy the kids some fish food pellets from the dispenser then chuck them into the "cement pond" and watch the big brook trout go into a feeding frenzy. Kids really get a kick out of that!
If you get out by the coast go down to Boothbay and see the railway museum there. They have a miniature train they give rides on. We used to like that when we were kids. There is also a narrow gauge railway museum in Portland on the east end of commercial street. I don't know much about it though I know they used to give short rides around the yard.

We did the Narrow Gauge in Portland a couple of years ago. They loved seeing it again when we went to the Eastern Prom for fireworks this year. My grandfather was a machinist where the station is located now. I wish we could afford the cog up Mt. Wash.

The Cog is great fun! Though you're right it's pretty expensive. I think it's around $68.00 per person now. We were planning to go there this summer though I think we may stick closer to home. We can see the Sea Dogs seven times for one trip up the Cog!
