They are very common around Bangor these days, and there are ticks in the northern part of the state as well. I've gotten ticks on me while fishing off of the Beaver Brook Road south of Portage. There are more in the southern part of the state and along the coast for sure, but it's not like it used to be: people in northern areas are at some risk as well now. It may not be common just yet, but it does exist, and the issue is only going to get worse.

Ha! I was just going to post that info. This thread was started back in 2010! Somehow it got resurrected. We've all done it, come across a thread and not noticed how old it was. It would have been interesting to hear what the OP eventually did. Lots of good answers, however. And, just fyi, the tick season here in CT has been brutal. Very mild winter (as winters go) and the tick population exploded. Ugh.

I agree that it is wise to rent first. Give oneself a chance to get settled in and explore the area, before deciding which town to buy a home in.

Some places its nearly impossible to rent first---like Mount Desert Island. Rental property other than an efficiency is so rare that when we put our 5 bdr 2 bath house up for rent for a full year's lease, our agent had more than 100 calls.

I'd estimate that at least every 3rd person we meet here in the Midcoast area has had Lyme disease.
The tick-born disease issue is like the 800 pound elephant in the room here in Maine that few people discuss for some reason. Quite the bummer.

Maine is a big state with over 900 towns. MDI is but one. A person could rent a house somewhere else. The idea is to be able to still explore Maine.

Is it generally cured, or do people just live with the symptoms?
