Everyone warned us about the winters and the cold, but the real problem in Maine is the epidemic of tick borne illenesses. Everyone we talked to since we arrived in Camden, mid-coast, has had or is suffering from the consequences of lyme diseases. My husband works at the hospital and sees things that others would not see. It is the worst problem here. We are leaving at the end of June, we don't want our child to get sick. Protecting yourself against ticks on a daily basis is very complicated. If we had known the reality of this situation, we would never have made the decision to move here.

I have never seen a tick. I live and work in the woods, but I live above the Volvo Line. Some day they may get up this far and I will need to use bug dope. Below the Volvo Line there are ticks. Moderator cut: Off topic comment removed.

Default The original poster has not posted anywhere on CD since 2010

Not only has the original poster not come back to this 2010 post from 7 years ago, he/she has never returned anywhere to city data since then and is probably DEAD!

Is this a "major" problem in Maine? I'm from CT and we had ticks too and knew people who got lyme disease. Used to go hiking and get them on me and my dog from time to time but never considered it a "major" issue or dealbreaker on living there. Then again I grew up there and was just used to it being the way it is. Now mosquitoes I hate with a passion! Glad we don't have them here like back in the northeast. They were one of the most annoying things about going camping/hiking.

Lyme Disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, powassan virus... it is not the ticks per se, it is what they transmit to humans and pets. It is surpassing HIV-Aids as a health crisis. It is easier to keep your head in the sand, ignorance is bliss. I love Maine, spent a lot of effort to move here but it is more than enough to make me reconsider. I want to warn families with children to be carefull if they try to decide to move here, not to obsess on the weather, that there are much greater reasons to worry. Maine has more cases per capita than Connecticut, especially here in Knox County. Everybody I spoke with has Lyme, do you have any idea what it means to live with Lyme disease?

While stationed in Connecticut, I had a friend who got lyme disease.

I don't think I know anyone who has gotten it in Maine. A lot of people spend time in the woods. I do not doubt that it is a problem and getting worse.

Ticks are an increasing problem in Maine. Many cases of tick-borne diseases go unreported because they're un/misdiagnosed. Lyme is just one of a half-dozen more diseases spread by ticks. No doubt more will be discovered.

The worst offenders are the tiny nymphs and larvae which, unlike the large adult form, are often unnoticed and therefore not removed until too late. Don't kid yourself, ticks are a potential problem in your yard as well as in the woods.

My cousin's 20-something year-old son has chronic Lyme and hasn't been able to work for years.

My sister, myself, and several close friends all got Lyme disease here in NJ.

So - it's where there are deer ticks and vegetation. Be vigilant.

(Yes, DaisyLD, i know what it's like to live with Lyme)
