Ok, let's pretend that I move into Lake Forest (an upper middle/lower upper income) subdivision in the JCPS area 5. Can someone please explain to me how I can be certain that my child will be assured they won't have to ride a school bus (45-75 minutes from my front door on a bus to a transfer depot and then to the school and back each afternoon) from far eastern Jefferson County to a school in almost far western Jefferson County? Does this mean that I may be required to drive 30 miles or more to attend a parent-teacher conference, a school play, or to pick up my sick child?

Please reassure me that this new system is better than the old. As a professional Realtor, I must be absolutely correct in answering future homeowners' questions about where their child will attend school. Even more importantly, in helping a seller determine a market value for their home, how with the new plan affect incoming students and therefore, the price a seller can genuinely expect. If parents must choose between a home mortgage and private/parochial tuition, it will affect home values.

well, I can only say that I am thankful my kids are already in the traditional program and won't have to change anything.

I have an idea. All kids go to their surrounding schools unless they want to. It will force the parents to give a crap about their kids instead of pawning them off on the teachers and then threatening lawsuit when the teacher get fed up and take even the smallest of stands. Bussing makes me sick.

We can walk to Bloom Elem and my daughter didn't get placed there or at our second choice, Field Elem. JCPS thought it would be a good idea to bus her 9 miles down to Cochrane Elem (Great Schools gives Cochrane a 1 on a scale of 1-10). "Diversity" must be more important than the environment. Using buses and making parents drive that much every day is ridiculously environmentally reckless. We live where we do so that we can walk to everything and take the bus downtown.

Needless to say, she won't be attending JCPS.

Can you get a hardship transfer? I have to say I hate the way bussing is done but because there aren't that many traditional schools it doesn't affect me much.

It is this exact reason that Oldham, Spencer, Shelby, Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, Floyd, Clark, and Harrision County populations are doing so well. It's not white flight, its simply love for our children and simple economics. If I have two children in private/parochial schools because I live in Jefferson County, that means that 2 x 12 x $6,000= $144,000 difference in the value of a Jefferson County home and one of the outside counties for a similar quality education as the parochial/privates can offer. $72,000 each child will go a long way towards a high quality college education.

As "empty nesters" we don't have a dog in this hunt but from an investment perspective all I can say is: Da**...I sure am glad we didn't buy a house in J.C. Thanks Tom.
