Closest parts of Louisville to Ft Knox is Valley Station (20 miles) which is a nice blue collar middle class area but the publics schools are bad based on test scores. I worked with someone whose husband commuted to FK and they lived around Jefferson Mall to be in the city and close to her work at I-64/ Hurstbourne. His commute was 1 hour each way. The part of Louisville with more high end amenities is East / NE part of town, far away from FK.

If I worked at FK my top choices would be Etown, Rineyville, Meade Co, even southern Harrison Co IN. Etwon is a good size town (25k) with most shopping and dining you need on a daily basis. It has a very different feel than Radcliff, much cleaner and better organized. A lot of areas around FK are gritty, including everything along US 31W from Radcliff to the Gene Snyder Freeway.

I also found a couple affordable homes in Irvington. Any thoughts on Irvington?

Going to irvington, it's in breckenridge county so taxes will be less. Hwy 60 can get you quickly to ft Knox in 20 minutes. Irritating factor in that the county and anything farther west is on central time zone. But that is minor, cute factor. Good thing is that it's closer to Rough River, which is a plus. Also it is a dry county. So you'll have to stock up in Meade county. All minor stuff. Land will be cheaper than in Meade county.
