i'd like to see a study that shows the effects of what would happen if the true cost of transportation was passed along to the user and not subisidized at all by the government.

I guess that would be true of certain areas...but that is certainly not a universal truth. Where I live plenty of people that have nice cars still take public transportation because it's cheaper and faster.

There are many professionals, such as myself, who utilizes mass transit. There are lots of poor and welfare recipients who utilizes personal vehicles to get around. It isn't all about the haves and have nots.

Exactly! It would STILL be cheaper to ride public transit over personal vehicle if the transit user had to pay full costs as carpooling is always cheaper. I personally think that many personal vehicle advocates are stupid for wasting so much money on their gas guzzlers when they could be putting that money away into a savings or retirement account. These folks seriously need to do a cost-benefit analysis and objectively look at how much money they are throwing away just to have the convenience of using a car.

Indeed.

The fact that Californians (more so in So Cal) need to be in a car constantly do to anything productive says more about the people than anything else.

I'm sorry but public transportation in a city BUILT to have it is not even close to being a pain in the butt. Go to a city that has a real transport system and you'll never want to drive in another car again.

Cars make life easier? OK...let me know how you feel after 6 months of the 405.

Have you added up the total cost of car ownership, taxes, registration fees, insurance, parking fees, maintenance and GAS???? No thanks. I can use that money to fund my next dream vacation or better yet, place it into my retirement account.

Yeah if all that money wasn't stolen from me to fund your mass transit.
