Hi. My family is moving from the DC area to CA this summer. My husband will be attending Biola in La Mirada. We are looking for a rental house in a safe, family-friendly neighborhood within an easy commute (less than 30 minutes : ) to La Mirada. We are not sure which freeways or areas to totally avoid. We are looking for a good school district, and with a good community family-friendly sports programs, specifically football, and baseball. The boys are ages 10 & 12. From what I can tell we want to go either NE towards Diamond Bar, or E towards Placentia/Brea, or SE towards Anaheim, in order to get a larger house for the money. However, I'm not sure what these commutes will be. Any advice would help! Thank you.

la mirada is actually a nice little town. nearby la habra/la habra heights and whittier also have some very nice parts. brea and fullerton would also be good options, but i wouldn't get any further away than that.

How about living in La Mirada? I don't know why you would want to live anywhere else, given your circumstances. BRinSM's alternative suggestions are also good.

As for which freeways to avoid in the La Mirada area, the 5 and the 91 are the main horror shows around there.

Have you checked GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community ?

One last suggestion: try Cerritos. But honestly, if I were you I'd stick with La Mirada. Save all that commute time and spend it at Disneyland instead. Your kids will thank you.

The strongest youth sports programs nearby to La Mirada that also fit your other needs will probably be Lakewood(Sports Illustrated #1 Youth Sports Town USA), Cypress, and Yorba Linda. Los Alamtios/Rossmoor is next to Cypress as well and offers two football leagues(tackle and flag) and two baseball leagues(Pony and a catholic league)

Anywhere you go, you'll want to be in the Orange Empire Conference(OEC) Pop Warner league for football rather than the Pacific league, which operates in many of the worst cities around(Lakewood may be the only city of the bunch that offers both tackle leagues). For baseball you'll have local Pony Baseball, Little League, Cal Ripken, and some other/independent leagues with each having varying rulesets. I prefer Pony, but that's me. Each city will vary

Someone did mention Cerritos, which is a very nice family community, but their youth sports programs are fairly lackluster, as well as their high school sports programs(except tennis and golf). The corresponding high schools in the cities I mentioned do have stronger options for high school sports as well.

Yeah unless you don't like midcentury housing there's really no reason not to live in La Mirada. The area around Biola is pretty nice and pretty safe.

Thanks all for the info! We are flying in next week to look at Biola and La Mirada. I think the only reason I started looking further out was to get more sq footage, a larger lot, and maybe even a tad of a view..or rolling hills : ) Dealing with Northern Virginia/DC area, we ended up moving further out just to get out of the congestion and homes packed together. I'm sure the commute would be awful if we went too far away from La Mirada. I'm going on great schools now to see what I find..Thanks!

unless you get REALLY far away from La Mirada, you're going to have to deal with homes packed together, that's just how the LA/OC area is.
