We are hoping to move to Calabasas -- returning to the LA area after moving out of state.

My daughter will be starting kindergarten in the fall. I have checked out the school performance maps and it looks like there are 3 good public elementary schools in Calabasas, but I'm wondering if anyone can share info about the schools that goes beyond numbers...is there anything that distinguishes one from the other? Positives or negatives about any of them that you can share?

Since we are house-hunting now, I was thinking it'd be easier if we knew which school district was our top choice. Also, do public schools allow you to visit them?

We are also thinking of checking out some private schools that are nearby. Still leaning towards public, but was hoping someone might be able to weigh in on some nearby private school options. We can't afford to pay the equivalent of college tuition on private schools (ie Calmont at $19,000 a year is too much for us), but was wondering if there are any affordable yet good options.

Thanks!

Some of our friends had their kids go to Viewpoint

There's also Oaks christian High School. I think Wayne Gretky's and Joe Montana's kids go there (??).

You might look at Our Lady of Malibu (very good) and Chaminade College Preparatory (very good) in West Hills. Also St. Bernardines (very good) in Woodland Hills.

The school districts from Las Virgenes west (Conejo Valley, Oak Park) are all very good.

I can't think of anything that would distinguish the public schools other than the performance and demographic information that you can easily get online.

It's a very good region to live in.

You probably already know about www.greatschools.org

From what I have just read I didn't get a really good opinion of the elementary schools in Calabasas. Seems like the best school in that district was Chapparel Elementary. Bay Laurel sounded just average. I did use Greatschools for you because I don't have elementary school age children anymore. I still think Agoura and Oak Park schools are better. All the private schools in Calabasas are extremely expensive. What does it tell you about the public schools if the same area has so many private schools?

Al Capone, when asked why he robbed banks: "Because that's were the money is."

Could be private schools are there because that's where people who can afford private schools live.

Bay Laurel shows up as a 9 out of 10 on Great Schools. It's ranked 10/10 on API.

The parent reviews are all 5 out 5 except one, which was posted yesterday. What a coincidence.

The negative review was just yesterday and the two positives were in 2006 and 2004. A lot can change in five years. Lot's of money in Oak Park and Westlake/North Ranch but they are not brimming over with private schools, are they? Oaks Christian and....?

Good work Charles. Now how many are just elementary schools which would really help the OP?
