I am contemplating right now wether or not to move back to Chicago where everything is accessible. You can walk everywhere. Here in SD you have to drive to any destination. I mean of course the weather is a no brainer beautiful but I too work every day so It's difficult to enjoy. Most people would say I am just CRAZY to leave San Diego where people VACATE to go back to Chicago and it's very cold weather. Chicago is an amazing city though. AM I crazy?

Do what makes you happy. There's little point to living in an area with great weather if you can't take advantage of it because you're working all day to pay the sunshine tax.

no, you are not crazy. chicago is a great city (current gubernatorial administration, notwithstanding), and i would live there in a heartbeat if i could tolerate the weather. however, i'm prone to SAD, and need more sunlight than chicago offers during the winter months, and the humid summers are equally miserable. you, on the other hand, have managed there before, and it sounds like that is where your heart is. so, go home!

What is happening here in California is you are going to have rich and poor with no middle class, that is the way it's going, and California is great if you have a lot of money, it is all about status here. I would agree that most people driving the Esclalades and Mercedes can't really afford them, but at least they look good.

In California the people who think housing costs here are obscene, move elsewhere and the people who stay are the ones who rationalize to themselves that the quality of life justifies the expense.

If you stay, you will run into a bunch of people who will tell you that you are crazy to leave. But if you go, you will run into a bunch of other people who left the state and agree with you that the the quality of life in California didn't justify the high cost of living.

I am not telling you what you should do as much as to just ignore the crowd.

Oh, they have a sales tax in Minnesota, but it doesn't apply to clothing, food, or medication.

It makes me smile when I read endless tales of Californians with no money who live the high life.
I know loads of people who are very rich dont fake everything and enjoy life.
I am a single parent with two kids and I don't have an army of people doing things for me I do stuff myself and always have.
If you rely too much on other people for help or money one day they will let you down and then your problems will really start.
And before someone replys that all this is easy to say if you have money...yes you are perfectly correct, but the money I have I made because no other option existed.

Default SoCal versus Chi-town

Hey everyone... I currently live in Chicago and absolutely need to get out of here. . The weather sucks horribly and for those of you who think SoCal is more expensive then Chicago... think again. Living in Chicago is NOT cheap. About 3 years ago my husband and I bought a 2400 sq. ft. condo in Chicago (not downtown about 15 miles away from downtown) for $430K. When the weather was good we couldn't enjoy the weather either during the summer months (fyi... there is no Spring or Fall, the season goes from Summer to Winter from Winter to Summer) we would be sitting behind the desk working away too. I would rather live in LA than Chicago anyday... Hope to pack up our stuff in Chicago to be out in LA very soon. . Oh yeah one more thing... gas prices were the most expensive here in Chicago then anywhere in the United States. At the high point it was at $4.85 a gallon. SICK SICK SICK.

Hate Chicago... Love LA...

That's pretty cheap if its in a good area especially since it's probably worth less today.
