I've always believed that, when I've walked down a sidewalk with somebody that's only wide enough for two people, and somebody approaches from the opposite direction, it's impolite to not fall back into tandem so that the person walking in the opposite direction can pass. However, more often than not, people insist on walking two abreast even when somebody is trying to pass from the opposite direction, and as a result, make the passerby barely squeeze by. Isn't this rude?

Man, I thought I was the only one who noticed that self centered behavior.
Very irritating because it's like your being belittled. I've said "share the road man" more a few times, but usually the response is a blank stare or a "huh??"

It's a combo of different mindsets.. The world revolving around that person, their chosen-one attitude, poor upbringing, and pure cluelessness to those around them.

Those are the same people that stand in a walkway outside an exit and talk while blocking everyone else from going and coming.

Yes, it's incredibly annoying, and sometimes threatening. It happens pretty much every single time I walk anywhere on the USC campus. You would expect on a college campus people would be used to walking around among large crowds of people everyday and would have developed basic "walking etiquette" without even thinking about it, but no, not at all. And it's not just jocks and frat boys-- it's also MBAs wearing suits totally absorbed in their ***-kissing conversations with each other and guest speakers and recruiters not paying attention at all.

Some people just ain't had no fetching up. They were never taught manners.
It's a me, me, me world.
Yesterday I went to a hardware store and held the door open for a little boy and his mother who was exiting as I was entering.
The little boy said "thank you".
I told him "your welcome" and then I congratulated his mother on raising such a polite child.
There are still a few of us around who don't think the world revolves around us.

I would put it in the same category as not using blinkers.

It's rude, annoying and when that happens I used to move out of their way, but now I just walk into one of them and they usually move out of the way at the last minute and give me a nasty look. Yes it was rude of me, to want to use 1/2 the sidewalk.

when I walk towards them they never move, I always have to jump off the sidewalk or walk on the grass to make room for them.

same thing happens in places like WALMART, they know your trying to walk past but they wont move unless you say something, so I usually go around to another aisle to get around them.

While living abroad this problem was everywhere - especially on narrow sidewalks where barely one person can get by. I solved the problem by walking my rottweiler whenever I went for a walk (on a leash, of course). The people coming from the opposite direction would actually step off the sidewalk and give me a wide berth.

I haven't really encountered this problem here - since nobody walks in LA (that's what Dale Bozio sang, and I concur).

Why would you do that? Next time, keep walking right through.

I dont like talking to strangers or arguing with people in public

in past experiences I have found it to be a waste because if you have to tell somebody to move they usually do the opposite, nobody likes being told to do something, they always challenge you around here.

a lady use to run all over my lawn with her kid playing with a ball and I told them to stay off my property and they kept comming back at least 20 - 30 times just because I told them to please stay off my property.

thats why I dont waste my time arguing with dummies
