I visited LA for the first time this past spring, and I have to say that I loved it. I'm a native New Yorker living in Ohio, and I was told by the Ohio locals that I wouldn't like LA. I thought it was excellent -- beautiful, plenty to do, and very laid back (memo: I stayed off the highways!).

So I was curious to see, of the natives and other posters on this forum, what do people think is the best neighborhood/area in the LA area?

Non-locals usually don't see much of the nasty side of L.A. They do see Hollywood and Venice (both of which vary widely from neighborhoods that are great to areas that are nasty, and in between - admittedly the nasty cholo'd out part of Venice sees very few tourists), and many see downtown (which can be really nasty once you're outside the tourist/gentrified zones), but in general they stick to the nice areas like Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Westwood, and Santa Monica. Few venture into South Central, East L.A. or Van Nuys.

Also add newport beach to the list.

Default You forgot Pasadena

Of your list, I'll pick Redondo but it's not my favorite place in L.A. If I was straight and Republican and had a family, I'd live there. Since I'm none of those things, I don't anymore.

2 people voted for Inglewood as BEST area??????

Huntington Beach has got to be the best, though.

This poll is kind of funky considering only 1.5 options are actual "neighborhoods in LA."(Hollywood and Downtown)
I'm not too sure why anyone would vote for inglewood..lol(joke?)

..best on list?...Huntington Beach, by far...

I couldn't vote. Places to visit are VERY different than places I would like to live.

We lived in Pasadena for 18 years. There ARE places to visit in Pasadena, but if I were to move back I would want to live in La Canada or Arcadia for the schools for my kids.

Now, to VISIT......I wouldn't say there is much in Arcadia or La Canada to visit, but the rest of the cities listed might have things to see and do (except Inglewood unless you are headed to the Forum.)

Default Bring lots of dough

Santa Monica is a great area to live in, but be prepared to pay for it, like $1800 a month for a little one bedroom. Venice is okay too if you live in the right area. Used to be all gangs, now it's primo real estate. I don't know why anybody in their right mind would want to move to Los Angeles. It's only great if you have lots and lots of money. If you're not making over $60K a year, don't bother.
