Masks do protect against flu, more than against COVID-19. I never heard any public figure over the years say they don't. I think better masks are more available to the general public than 10-20 years ago, and maybe public health has been asleep at the wheel for decades and vaccine-only isn't a new thing. It's hard to suddenly assert control without resistance after a long period of neglect. I think LA County should implement something - mandatory pharmacy masking, perhaps - to remind the public who's in charge.
Does the World Health Organization count as a “public figure”? You can find this information on page 32 of the document linked here:

I guess I can’t insert an image on this outdated platform.

“ OVERALL RESULT OF EVIDENCE ON FACE MASKS
1. Ten RCTs were included in the meta-analysis, and there was no evidence that face masks are effective in reducing transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.”

So, to summarize, as of 2019: 1) the WHO made it clear that many RCTs had failed to show masks reduce the transmission of flu and thus are not recommended; 2) zero RCTs have completed since demonstrating the contrary; 3) we’re now supposed to believe they do reduce transmission because certain public figures with credentials in science now say, and repeat incessantly, that they believe they will reduce transmission and, 4) because these particular scientists repeatedly state their belief in masks, they should be forced on every man, woman and child, including against the will of those who object.

Should you find yourself struggling to understand why there are no mask mandates, I suggest reading the above again.

The opinions, judgments and decisions made by people with credentials in science should never be conflated with actual science. And that’s where much confusion has occurred: despite what he thinks and says, people like Anthony Fauci are not themselves Science. His opinions are not science. His opinions may be considered more seriously than the opinions of others with lesser or no credentials (they may not be in the case of conflicts of interest), but his opinions are still just opinions. They can not and should not ever again be sufficient to impose restrictions and mandates on the entirety of society.

Is the claim that the 2019 WHO including 10 RCTs which failed to show masks reducing transmission of the flu as part of a recommendation against mask wearing for flu a lie? Was WHO not telling the truth? What is the evidence for that? Or is the claim that we have new data, RCTs to the contrary of what was included in the WHO report from 2019? Where is the evidence for that? Where are the RCTs showing masks reduce flu transmission?

If you refuse to have a real dialogue, you should just go out to a streetcorner and rant.

The evidence is the plunge in flu cases in late 2020. That's probably better than a small number of studies, which I don't see and might have been flawed (for example, probably not done in airports). It doesn't take much added protection to cut off flu transmission, especially outside of flu season. If 1 in 1000 airplane travelers in August has the flu and must mask and that works somewhat....

This is a solid piece in the Atlantic regarding the masks-into-perpetuity crowd.

“In the progressive imagination, science is sometimes treated like a static text that’s easy to interpret, with clear takeaways for behavior. “One of the big mistakes in our field is this mantra ‘Follow the science,’ as though science is not contested, as though there are not evidentiary gaps, as though there are not conflicting reports and data points you have to navigate your way through,” Fairchild, the O.S.U. professor, said. The People’s C.D.C. talks about “science” as proof that the members’ position is correct, when in reality they’re making a case for how they wish the world to be, and selecting scientific evidence to build their narrative. It’s a kind of moralistic scientism—a belief that science infallibly validates lefty moral sensibilities.

This approach falls flat in areas where scientific knowledge is lacking, such as long covid.”

You quoted an article from The New Yorker. And no one is advocating or pushing "masks-into-perpetuity." More hyperbole.

What have we learned since 2020 about wearing masks?

Masks are still an important tool in 2022, even though we have vaccines and therapeutics that were not available for COVID-19 in 2020, said AMA member Dr. Jennifer J. Bryan, adding that “masks are just one part of our armamentarium against the virus.”

While I typed the wrong publication name, it seems as if you didn’t even read the piece. It seems you didn’t even read the headline.
