I'm planning to look at "room and board" and cb2 for main modern furniture and good ole ikea for random accent stuff.

These guys absolutely have some more modern looking pieces, especially H&M. Have you looked at their catalog recently?

I looked when you suggested it, because I am looking for a sofa. These are so traditional it makes me choke. Sorry. And a few slightly "contemporary" sofas at the end of the page is not the same as modern.
Handcrafted Furniture by Hancock and Moore

More my style:
Roche Bobois - Meubles Design - Canapés design - Roche Bobois - Interior Design - Contemporary Furniture - Mobilier Design

Fair enough, though i think their stuff looks great. Whatever you end up going with, the construction of the frame is key to having a sofa that lasts a long time. You want 8 way hand tied springs and a solid wood frame. Otherwise your couch starts sagging in 3-5 years and you're out to get something new.

>Sigh< Yes, of course you are right, if can even find that without breaking the bank. My current 24-year old set actually has a metal frame (Nicoletti, but they apparently don't manufacture that way now); still has not sagged.

Thanks for the specific recommendation of what to look for.

Modern equals cheaply made crap. Anyone recommending Ikea knows bupkis about quality furniture. That chipboard junk will sag in a matter of months. Don't waste your money.
