Due to the ridiculous cost of getting a POD or POD-equivalent (really, I know gas is expensive, but $5100 for a 1-800-Packrat container?!?) and the fact that we don't really have anything we're too attached to, I have decided to come with nothing and get stuff out there.

So, with the pre-req that everything must be new (no craigslist or goodwill furniture), and knowing that I'm going to be living in Studio City, I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of furniture stores there were around there?

I have discovered that the nearest IKEA is in Burbank, and that Rooms-To-Go (the other big Philly area furniture store) does not exist out there. I'm obviously not going to be looking for anything super high-end, so I imagine I am going to have to look somewhere other than on Ventura Blvd, but essentially what I will need is a couch, a table and some chairs. Beds would be a bonus, but theres nothing wrong with a mattress on the ground for a while.

Obviously everything else (like kitchen stuff, etc) can be easily obtained at a Bed Bath & Beyond, but this will be my first time buying actual furniture, so I really don't know what I am doing here.

Thanks to any and all for the help.

Try Big Lots! or Target or Walmart. There's also a discount furniture store in North Holywood on Lankershim near Magnolia.

have you the impression that burbank is far from studio city? it isn't. there are only three IKEA stores in metro LA, and you are closer in studio city than most people, who have to drive halfway across the county to get to one of them. you will find everything you need at IKEA. however, for a mattress set, i would go elsewhere, like SIT AND SLEEP. (there's one on ventura blvd. in tarzana.) IKEA sells glorified futons.

I just re-read your post. Check U-Haul for rates. I'm pretty sure it'll be cheaper than a POD. especially with soo many more people moving from L.A. than to L.A. (according to U-Haul) there is a shortage of trucks. I'm thinking they'll be happy with a one way truck coming into L.A. instead of leaving.

i was gunna suggest some places, but they would all be south and east of DT LA or discount spots. so sorry i cant help, but good luck.

for anyone else, there used to be a hotel surplus warehouse over here in lovely vernon that had great deals on furniture, of course most of it was from hotels so i wouldnt suggest the beds, but they had great tables and head boards and lamps, and too bad they moved to the stinkin valley!!!!

also a lot of the furniture warehouses in vernon open to the public on certain weekends. this goes for clothes also. the kenneth cole, bcbg, guess warehouses have periodic sales in vernon. great finds at great prices. i love vernon for that.

lastly i have never been a fan of ikea, i respect the european asthetic and functionality but i prefer my furniture to last. ikea fits the often moving/disposable, cramped life style of europe more than LA. but you might find some great stuff, i never have (aside from some solid wood shelves and such). suerte amigo.

There's an ad I see on t.v. for "Living Spaces" they look like they have a wide variety of furniture. And I think from the commericals they play that they can deliver the same day.

Check them out.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Has anyone ever bought anything from 'Living Spaces'? Their stuff obviously looks good in pictures, and the couches are cheaper than IKEA, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything...

Thanks again.
