You mean one where the stop names are too small for us to read? Who's this system for, Stuart Little?

Can barely make it out but it needs more E-W central LA arterial lines. There's a lot of desirable stuff between Red and Purple lines. I've always thought a Melrose light rail would be a good idea, though that street is pretty narrow at points so it might not be feasible. Maybe a subway... that would be amazing. Venice Blvd is like a freeway at some points... we could definitely take out the median that starts around Crenshaw and build LRT.

As for whether it's possible in 50 years? Not at the lobotomized pace our current transit expansion is at

In real time, the pace is excruciating. But if the rate were to remain constant, the MTA would have 280 track miles in 50 years.

You can see a larger map via the website in that .gif. under downloads. Will never happen in 100s of years.

This calls for about 440 track miles, and we're on pace for 280 in 50. Whatever we do end up with will assuredly not mirror that map, but I'm not sure where the certainty of "never" is coming from. I'm just glad I'm not infected by it.

Yeah well that map isn't going to happen because it has alternative versions of planned future lines. But to say transit could "never" reach that level is pretty ridiculous. Not in our lifetimes, perhaps. I read somewhere that in 20 years 85% of Los Angeles jobs will be within 1/2 mile of a transit stop (including bus).

Even if LA were to get a system like that one day, I wouldn't want it. The city is not built for public transit. I think light rail works well in LA, but the actual LA subway is an absolute horrible system. That's why I'm not excited about it going to the West side in some 20-odd years.

I don't think we'll ever see an LA where you can truly live without a car with ease and be able to walk to everything half a mile from each stop. The city just can't handle it.

Not sure why you hate the Red Line. It carries a hefty price tag but it people use it and it helps explain the revitalization of places like Koreatown.

I agree the sheer expanse and Santa Monicas will prevent the majority of Angelenos from relying exclusively on a comprehensive rail network. That's where we go multi modal. To eleven, if necessary. A full build out of thecurrentMTA project list AND our current bus system gives us...a decent mass transit system. I'll take that.
