I was having fun playing with some census data this morning. Specifically, I was looking at table C16010
EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT AND EMPLOYMENT STATUS BY LANGUAGE SPOKEN AT HOME FOR THE POPULATION 25 YEARS AND OVER
2009-2011 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimates

American FactFinder - Results *

For the city of Los Angeles, the results are fascinating. They really show that it is a different world for people that speak English at home vs people that speak Spanish at home.

Here's some things that surprised me.

More 25+yo people living in the city of LA speak Spanish at home than English at home
  • 808,000 speak Spanish at home
  • 655,000 speak English at home
  • 331,000 speak something else
25+yo people that live in LA and speak Spanish at home are way more likely to be high-school dropouts:
  • 63% of 25+yo adults that speak Spanish at home are high school dropouts
  • 12% of people that speak Engish at home
  • 18% of people that speak another language at home
25+yo people that live in LA and speak Spanish at home are way more likely to have a job than people who speak English at home
  • 68% Spanish at home have a job
  • 50% of English at home
  • 48% of people that speak another language at home have a job
For people that speak English at home, the more educated you are, the more likely you are to have a job. 80% of English speaking people with Bachelor's Degrees or greater have a job, but, only 56% of high school grads and 40% of high school dropouts.

Same for Spanish speakers, but, less dramatic. 85% of Spanish speakers with Bachelor's degrees or greater have a job, 78% of high school grads, and 67% of high school dropouts.
