Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo - are they very similar in terms of the cost of living and who lives there (age, income, background, gender, education)?

Not at all except all tend to be on the affluent side and mild weather. For example:

-Santa Monica is the largest beach city in LA County (ok, Long Beach is, but you get the point) and it's immediately west of areas like Downtown LA, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. Mostly affluent, the biggest beach tourist destination. Lots of liberal politics but not as out there as Venice.

-Venice is part of the city of LA so it's rundown. Has some dangerous parts and the boardwalk attracts a lot of weirdos. Also has some expensive real estate. Very liberal and alternative, tons of marijuana and artists.

Hermosa/Redondo/Manhattan Beach are more conservative, white, square, and upper middle class.

Maybe not compared to the rest of the US, but to other coastal parts of LA county. Since most people there are homogenous... lean conservative, nothin crazy, board shorts and beers

Apparently semi-retired beach bums are square, where as artists and druggies and partying kids arent

Beach cities have partying kids too. They're just heterosexual frat boys who drink beer and watch girls and get married by 30. Venice is a lot more eclectic.

I just read in another thread that Venice is a bit ghetto by day, and unsafe at night. What about the other beach towns?

By the way, isn't Venice really close to Santa Monica? Why are they so different?

Parts of Venice, yes. The other beach towns are very safe.

Venice is adjacent to Santa Monica, but their proximity doesn't make them the same. Hancock Park is next to Koreatown but they're pretty much opposites.

Santa Monica is hip and expensive, progressive and a bit snotty.

Venice is dirty and sort of expensive. Cramped.

Manhattan has a lot of money. Very snobby.

Hermosa is party town, very crowded, some money.

Redondo is more diverse. Lower middle to upper middle income. Seems like people are trying to be upper class.

While Manhattan might be relatively snobbier, I still wouldnt call it snobby. Newport Beach (and more or less the majority of South OC) defines snobby to me
