I need to drive up to Northern California via the 5 frwy. I am thinking of heading out about 7-8pm on Friday night to try and avoid the crunch of the family vacationers, commuters etc.. This is on Labor Day Weekend.

I have not taken a road trip in this direction on a holiday weekend for a long time, so I'm not sure if its a parking lot.
or if it will be busy but moving along. Trying to avoid 10-20 mph stop and go.

Anyone have any experience with traffic up interstate 5 on a friday night of the 3 day weekend?

Thanks

It will be stop and go, probably for most of the northbound direction on I-5 during those hours. I drive from the Bay Area to LA and vice versa frequently and before holidays and see the traffic back-up on NB I-5 (near the I-5 & I-14 junction) out of Southern California. Try and leave earlier if possible, or leave on Thursday night.

Thanks for the info. I am expecting traffic up until the I15, but am hoping north of that, it will open up.

I cant really take off much earlier, so I was thinking of going 8pm or later.

So as a followup we left West Los Angeles at 2pm. Between 1pm-2pm, I could see the streets were starting to get busy and hit the 405 northbound right at 2pm. Traffic was moving at about 65mph all the way up the 405 and on the 5. The 5 was busy but again, we did not go less than 55-65mph the entire trip all the way into San Francisco. Lots of trucks that contributed to the 55-65 speeds, but no delays at all..

I think if we left in the evening, it would have been a different story.
