Er, self-help videos perhaps?

Hi, you should be able to find a decent 2br for $1600. Rents in L.A I think are lower than many people imagine (although definitely not cheap) ...but when compared to NYC area or San Francisco they do look pretty cheap.

Best of luck!

You can definitely find 2 bedrooms for 1400 in safe areas. Some areas that I've recently seen these prices are in Palms, Culver City, and Mar Vista. These places are more "in the city," but you could find lots of other cities that offer the same value if that's what you desire. Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Burbank, and numerous other places in the Valley can be found for around 1400. There's also places like Pasadena that are east a bit. The advantage of not living in the city is coming home to a quieter neighborhood. The disadvantage of the Valley or east areas like Pasadena is the air quality gets a lot worse the further you get from the ocean. I don't recommend trying to do this in Santa Monica, as it's more expensive there. Santa Monica is also so crowded with rude people and bad drivers. Same with Hollywood. Don't live in Hollywood! West Hollywood is nice though.

I also recommend Craigslist (watch out for scams though about people living in Africa that are offering really cheap rent). Also check out Hotpads.com, and Westsiderentals. I've discovered most of the listings on Westsiderentals are also on Craigslist, so you may not need it.

Also, coming from charleston SC, it will be bit of shock to see many minorities here. Huge population of Latinos and Asians. Come here and feel the vibe then decide to move.

Totally agree. To say that the LA area has a large "latino" population is an understatement.

Many, many areas of Los Angeles are FILLED with mainly hispanics, with many of them being illegal.

Something to consider.

Yeah that darn flood of Latinos, driving down Los Angeles' crime rate!

Unless your wife is set on the Westside, take a look at Los Feliz. Great area for your demo and an overall nice part of town.

Charleston has "minorities".. in fact, they're almost "majorities" in certain areas...

I would definitely recommend that you make the move! Charleston has some nice weather and beaches, but so does LA! Plus, LA has the better scenery hands down! LA is more diverse, bigger, and just one of the best world cities period! Delicious food, nice people, laid-back and healthy lifestyle, lots to do! You should probably look at some of the suburban communities in the Valley.
